My studio is dedicated to helping you develop and nurture your talents, and help you reach your full potential as a singer. Laurie’s studio is exclusively a\u00a0Speech Level Singing\u00a0<\/u>Studio.\u00a0 The Speech Level Singing (SLS) Technique, developed by Seth Riggs, has an unsurpassed track record of training some of the best voices and artist in the music business.\u00a0 It is the technique behind 120 Grammy Award Winners, 4 winners of the New York Metropolitan Opera Awards, numerous Star Search winners, American Idol finalists, countless Broadway stars, television personalities, and recording artists.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Seth Riggs<\/b><\/span>\u00a0who is the key figure in developing this method and has been the vocal coach for\u00a0Michael Jackson, Bernadette Peters, Natalie Cole, Julie Andrews, Josh Groban and Kelly Clarkson\u00a0<\/b>and more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dean Kaelin<\/b><\/span>\u00a0trained and was the accompanist for Seth Riggs for over 2 years, while working in Los Angeles. Dean now lives in SLC and for over 20 years has coached many who have become professional.\u00a0 He coached the group,” She Daisy”.\u00a0\u00a0Carmen Rasmussen,<\/b>\u00a0(American Idol) 5th place 2005.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0David Archeleta<\/b>\u00a0(American Idol) second place 2008 and (junior American Idol winner) and many others who have signed record label contracts and those who have toured and sung on Broadway.<\/span><\/p>\n

About Me:\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>I grew up singing and performing my whole life.\u00a0 At the age of 13, I began singing lessons.\u00a0 I went on to perform in many high school music groups, school plays and musicals.\u00a0 I received a 4 year VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP to Utah State University, where I studied Broadway singing and some classical and opera.\u00a0 I studied both Voice and Theatre.\u00a0 While there I performed and soloed in various musicals and choir productions.\u00a0 I was a participant in the Miss Utah pageant in 1976 and again in 1977.\u00a0 I married Doug Vandegrift 1979.\u00a0 We started a band in 1980, called “Starflite”.\u00a0 We performed all over northern Utah from 1980 until 1994.\u00a0 During that time we also were very involved in local theater productions, as a family.<\/span><\/p>\n

I began to study with\u00a0Dean Kaelin<\/b>\u00a0in the Fall of 1997 and began teaching SPEECH LEVEL SINGING in the Fall 1998 and I continue my education with the many training sessions and seminars put on by the Speech Level Singing Association. I am currently a certified teacher of SPEECH LEVEL SINGING. In my lessons I also coach theatre audition technique, theatrical character & performance technique.<\/span><\/p>\n

MY Students success in school and local theatre:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>I have seen rewarding vocal success come to those I have taught.\u00a0 Many have been selected to be in the Madrigal and Chamber choirs.\u00a0 They have received leading roles in high school musicals and at Rogers Memorial, Bountiful Performing Arts, Hale Theatre and other community productions. Students have received full tuition Musical Theatre Scholarships to both Colleges and Universities.<\/p>\n

Many of my young students ages\u00a0<\/span>8 through Junior High School\u00a0<\/span>have had opportunities to play lead roles in both their school plays and musicals and at Rogers Memorial Theatre and Centerpoint Theatre. Listed below are mostly my adults and high school students.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Erik Ward<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(age 10)\u00a0 Auditioned here in Salt Lake City and was chosen and performed the role of\u00a0Gavrosh<\/b><\/span>\u00a0with the\u00a0Les Miserable\u00a0<\/i>Touring Company in 2003<\/b>, traveling all over the world for a year.<\/p>\n

Aimee Pettegrew Geddes\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Was awarded a full tuition Musical Theatre Scholarship to\u00a0Weber State University<\/b><\/span>\u00a0.\u00a0 She was then selected to perform in a music\/theatre troop that entertained guest coming off of the\u00a0Cruise ships, in Alaska<\/b>.\u00a0 She was a finalist in the\u00a0Star of the West competition<\/b>\u00a0for this year – here in Utah.\u00a0\u00a0In August of 2008, She performed singing and acting in a local Hertz car commercial.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Angel Vandegrift<\/span>\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0– received a full tuition Musical Theatre Scholarship to\u00a0Western Wyoming College<\/b>. and a Musical Theatre scholarship to\u00a0Weber State University<\/b>.\u00a0 From 2004 until 2009, she worked fulltime at\u00a0Walt Disney World<\/b><\/u><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0She performed in the roles of\u00a0Ariel<\/b>,\u00a0Snow White<\/b>(in the Castle show),\u00a0Mary Poppins<\/b>\u00a0and the role of\u00a0Drizella,\u00a0<\/b>Cinderella’s wicked step sister.\u00a0 In her last year of working there She was promoted to a “Princess trainer”.\u00a0 In July of 2007, she performed live at Epcot in there summer variety show, where she solo performed\u00a0When You Wish Upon A Star<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 She sang the song of her life dream and that was to perform and sing at Disney World.\u00a0 She opened the show singing the song with tear filled eyes<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Lessons are 40 minutes __Taught on\u00a0Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mornings, afternoon and evenings until about 8 pm.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

MONTHLY TUITION\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/u>ensures you a permanent spot in the schedule.\u00a0 LESSONS ARE\u00a0$35.00<\/b>\u00a0FOR A\u00a0 40 MINUTE LESSON\u00a0and are expected to be paid as a MONTHLY TUITION of\u00a0$130\u00a0for 4 lessons\u00a0<\/strong>per month\u00a0A\u00a0$10<\/strong>\u00a0savings\u00a0if paid by the first lesson of the month<\/u><\/strong>.<\/u>\u00a0\u00a0THIS ONLY APPLIES TO MONTHLY TUITION OF 4 LESSONS –<\/strong>Tuition paid after, is the full amount of\u00a0$140.<\/p>\n

Lessons can be started at anytime of the year<\/strong>\u00a0and they are taught year round.\u00a0 The teaching year is divided into 3 Sessions –\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fall Session<\/strong>–September<\/strong><\/b>) until Showcase held at the end of January = 4 1\/2 months.\u00a0 No lessons the last 2 weeks of December and tuition is half.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spring Session<\/strong>–\u00a0First of February until the Showcase held the 3rd week of May\u00a0<\/strong>= about\u00a04 months.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once you have decided to take lessons, I ask that you remain with lessons through the end of each block, which would end with your performance in the Showcase.\u00a0If you choose to end your lessons after the showcase, please tell me 3 to 4 weeks ahead of the Showcase date.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n

Summer Session<\/strong>\u00a0–\u00a0First of June – end of August with special accommodations during the summer to allow you to pick and choose your lesson times around your summer schedule.\u00a0 No Showcase with this Session.<\/strong><\/p>\n

PERFORMANCE SHOWCASE<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are two (2) scheduled Showcases each year. Shows will be\u00a0 in –\u00a0January\u00a0and\u00a0May.<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 All students are invited to perform in the Showcase.\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0Performing is a crucial part of learning to sing.\u00a0 We will work during private lessons on a song, performance and style technique to prepare you for the Showcase.\u00a0\u00a0If it is not possible for you to participate in the showcase, please talk to me.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Studio Location is –<\/strong><\/p>\n

633 West 1850 North, West Bountiful, UT<\/strong><\/p>\n

just off of the Centerville exit from I-15 freeway.\u00a0 Head west down from the overpass and turn left at 1250 W (Centerville).\u00a0 Drive to stop sign (this is about where you are now in West Bountiful) Then go forward through the stop sign.\u00a0 follow the road as it curves.\u00a0 You will pass a large red brick church on your left, then just as you pass the church, the street on the right is 1850 (my street).\u00a0 The first new 2 story house on your left is my home and studio – 633.\u00a0 The front door faces the corner of the road.\u00a0 The studio is in the front of the house where the windows stick out in the front and there is an SLS sign in the front window.\u00a0 Please park\u00a0 across the street or on the street in front of the house.\u00a0 Please do not park in the driveway.\u00a0 Once you come in the front door, the studio will be on your left and the waiting area is on your right.\u00a0 When I am with a student please sit in the waiting area until I dismiss the student.\u00a0 The studio doors have glass, so you can see me working with the student, while waiting.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

24 HOUR CANCELLATION POLICY:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n

1) Lessons must be cancelled or rescheduled 24-hours in advance; otherwise lesson time will be charged\/forfeited regardless of attendance.\u00a0 This policy is in force, with exceptions of extreme illness or emergency (to be judged per situation).<\/p>\n

2)__For situations of true sickness or emergency, notice must be given AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.<\/p>\n

CANCELED LESSON MAKE UP!<\/u>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Please<\/u>\u00a0ARRANGE YOUR MAKEUP LESSON\u00a0<\/strong>in advance of any lessons that you will need to miss during the month or you\u00a0need to forfeit your payment<\/u><\/strong>for that lesson.\u00a0 There will be\u00a0NO credit given<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/u>to any missed lessons without a\u00a0one day notice,<\/strong>\u00a0with the acceptation of an emergency.\u00a0\u00a0Make up lessons are available on the last Monday of each month and may be available on other days as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n

LESSONS BEGIN\u00a0 WITH VOCAL EXERCISES<\/b><\/u><\/p>\n

The exercises that you are taught are very\u00a0 important in furthering you voice.\u00a0 The more you practice them, the faster your voice will improve to be what you want it to be.\u00a0 So-<\/b><\/p>\n

PLEASE PRACTICE THEM A LOT!<\/b><\/p>\n

SONG CHOICE –\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>We will choose songs together that will help to further your vocal training.\u00a0 Please feel free to suggest songs.\u00a0 Many songs are good and I am always open for new song ideas.\u00a0 Songs can also be chosen from the music in my studio library.\u00a0\u00a0I also have access to any song through YOU TUBE – on the internet.\u00a0 I have equipment to change keys and drop vocals off any of these songs from YOU TUBE.\u00a0 I have microphones and recording equipment to record everything on your lesson cd and you will go home with the song or songs that you will be working on.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0All of this is included in you tuition cost.\u00a0 You may also bring in your ipod or a cd of any artist that you would like to learn and we can drop the singer\u2019s voice and record your voice over the singers, onto your lesson cd. We want to choose songs that will \u201cwork\u201d your voice and songs that you enjoy singing, so please feel free to suggest and choose songs.<\/p>\n

LYRICS FOLDER<\/strong><\/u>\u00a0You will be given a folder.\u00a0 This is to be brought to your lessons\u00a0every week.<\/u>\u00a0 In this folder I will write notes that will help you with correctly practicing the songs.\u00a0 The notes that I made the previous week, I will use to further continue working with your voice.<\/p>\n

\u00a0PRACTICING\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/u>Please, please\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>practice a little EVERYDAY!<\/p>\n

It is important to be doing your vocal warm-ups everyday.\u00a0 I know it is much more fun to sing songs and I encourage you to practice songs, but don\u2019t overlook the importance of\u00a0doing the warm-ups\u00a0<\/strong>each day to get your mind and voice strengthened and to develop increased control.\u00a0 I try to give you warm-ups each week that are best for where your voice is at that particular time, so the last lesson\u2019s exercises would be the best to practice vocalizing with.<\/p>\n
